I originally came here with the sentiment of "Bailemen", but I didn't expect to include it on my "must stay list" when I came to Shanghai after staying there. Even my habit of always crowded with internet celebrities to check in has been completely cured.
As soon as I checked in, I was immersed in a retro atmosphere. The Jing'an Temple landscape room I ordered was directly amazed when I opened the door. The whole french window was facing the gilded roof of Jing'an Temple. The newly renovated room in 2024 has no sense of old architecture at all. The jazz music of the dance hall faintly wafted up from downstairs, as if I had really met the old Shanghai of the 1930s in a trance. The softness and hardness of the bedding just hit me, a person who knows beds. The fluffy cotton quilt wrapped around me, and outside the window there was only the faint sound of bicycle bells in the old alleyway. I slept through two consecutive nights until dawn, completely free from the insomnia problem of staying in unfamiliar hotels like before.
The most amazing thing is its "immersive" experience. Take a turn downstairs and you'll be at the Bailemen Dance Hall. You don't have to squeeze through the crowds of people waiting in line, just use your room key to enter the exclusive passage and listen to an old jazz song. It takes 3 minutes to walk to Jing'an Temple, and 10 minutes to walk to the old western-style houses on Yuyuan Road. I walk slowly along Nanjing West Road every evening. The wutong trees along the way cover the continuous shade, and even the time to drive has become a pleasure. When returning to the hotel late at night, the doorman would smile and hand over a cup of warm barley tea, saying that the cool breeze on Nanjing West Road at night would make it warm and comfortable to drink.
During these two nights, I completely jumped out of the routine of checking in at popular online stores and crowded at popular attractions. In the morning, I watched the sunlight fall on the golden roof of Jing'an Temple by the window. In the evening, I went to stroll around the old alleyway on Yuyuan Road. In the late night, I went downstairs to listen to an old jazz song at Bailemen. I used to think that the charm of old Shanghai only existed in old movies, but this time I realized it by living upstairs at Bailemen. You don't have to find any special emotional check-in points.
